James Roday on Welcoming William Shatner to Psych: "He's Unstoppable"
William Shatner For his role as Shawn Spencer on Psych, James Roday has had to do a lot of crazy things over the years (see: dressing up like a vampire, engaging in a kung-fu battle). But the craziest may have been asking guest star William Shatner to appear in a Psych video for Comic-Con earlier this year. "I was so nervous asking him to do that. It all ended up in my lap and everybody was just sort of crossing their fingers, like 'Roday, go see if you can get him to do this,'" the actors tells TVGuide.com. "And he was just so accommodating and so lovely. I think he could tell I was nervous about asking him and he totally put me at ease. He was like 'Of course, I'll do it.'" Exclusive sneak peek: William Shatner cashes in on Psych Getting Shatner to star in the video - in which he told "Psych-Os" everywhere to keep up the good work - was just the first step of his initiation into the Psych universe. On Wednesday's episode, airing at 10/9c on USA, the Star Trek vet will play the con man dad of Juliet (Maggie Lawson). "Psych kind of lives in tribute of pop culture and it doesn't get much bigger than William Shatner. But I think the key for us was don't use him as a joke, don't use him as a gag," Roday says. "Acknowledge the fact that he's William Shatner, but give him a great role with good stuff to do because he's also a tremendous actor." Shatner's character, Frank, returns to Juliet's life just in time for her birthday but nobody can tell whether he's really kissed his life of crime goodbye or whether it's just an act to win back his daughter. To make matters worse, Shawn stops at nothing to win over his girlfriend's dad even though she wants nothing to do with him. Roday made sure it was a part worth Shatner's time. "He's an 80-year-old who has as much, if not more, energy than Dulé [Hill]. and I. He had probably the heaviest load any guest star on our show has ever carried," Roday says. "He was working all seven days all day, and then the one weekend we had off, he did two live shows. He's unstoppable." Psych's James Roday on Shawn and Juliet, Gus' growing pains and breaking all the rules Although Psych has welcomed plenty of big name guest stars over the years - including this season Molly Ringwald, Danny Glover and Jason Priestley - Roday remembers a special feeling in the air the week of Shatner's episode. "We were all just kind of in awe. It was also the first time that you could tell that our show's crew was collectively star struck," Roday says. "We get a lot of great people, but everybody kind of showed up with their merchandise, hoping to get an autograph or get a picture." Watch a sneak peek from Wednesday's episode:

Miramax mines digital gold
Miramax's aggressive digital exploitation of its library is starting to pay dividends. The company has inked more than half a dozen digital distribution deals since new owners took over the library last year - including Monday's announcement of a pact with Brazilian subsciption-based service NetMovies - and now Miramax is in the market to securitize its assets. The securitization, which Bloomberg reports will total $550 million, will allow Miramax's owners to monetize the library's assets quickly -- and that includes those distribution contracts Miramax has inked with players including Netflix and Hulu as well as cashflows from future deals. And, according to Bloomberg, it will allow Miramax to pay a $142 million dividend to investor Colony Capital. Film-backed securitizations are not common, and usually include the production of future movies. Company has not produced any pics since a group of investors purchased it in 2010. A refinancing so quickly, and without new product, could signal that new investors are banking on the future worth of Miramax's older assets. While Miramax declined to comment on future production plans, many observers wonder how long the company can go without more aggressively acquiring or producing new product. While Hollywood started buzzing several years ago that streaming and digital platforms might beef up film values, few were willing to lend against those projections as very few deals were being made in the space. The proliferation of digital licensing deals over the last few years however, especially from major players like Netflix, Amazon and Google, have led some investors to believe in the long-term value of older content. The consortium of investors purchased Miramax from Disney for about $600 million last year. At the time, many observers doubted that the new owners could make their money back. Calculating library values now is tricky - evaluations must take into account the realized value of older assets and make estimations for packaged media, a complicated task given the decline in home entertainment revenues in recent years. And while digital dimes aren't making up for losses in packaged media dollars, they've certainly helped Miramax. Since coming under new ownership, the comapny has inked deals with platforms including Netflix, Hulu, Lionsgate and Facebook, making some naysayers rethinking that opinion. The Miramax securitization is backed by the company's library of more than 700 films, including "Shakespeare in Love," "The English Patient" and "Pulp Fiction." Beginning Dec. 1, NetMovies will make the titles available on a variety of platforms including PCs, Macs, Smart TVs, Blu-ray players, iOS and Android tablets. Company will also provide titles on video game consoles in the near future. Contact Rachel Abrams at Rachel.Abrams@variety.com

FX says no to 'Outlaw Country'
FX has opted not to give a series order to "Outlaw Country." Cabler had gone forward with a pilot, but the net just recently decided the show didn't offer enough potential for a series. Exec produced by David Manson, who wrote the script with Josh Goldin and Rachel Abramowitz, "Outlaw" centered on a Nashville crime family. The project starred John Hawkes, Mary Steenburgen, Luke Grimes and Haley Bennett. Fox TV Studios and FX Prods. were onboard as producers. Art Linson and John Linson exec produced with Manson. Michael Dinner directed the first pass on the pilot, and Adam Arkin came onboard for reshoots. Next up for FX president John Landgraf is a decision on the fate of comicbook adaptation "Powers," from Sony Pictures Television and FX Prods. Pilot, which was shot in the summer and stars Jason Patric, is also about to undergo reshoots. FX can afford to be choosy in determining its upcoming drama slate: Net has been faring well of late with "American Horror Story," which has been boffo out of the gate. Supporting versus. lead debate an annual discussion
'Carnage''The Tree of Life''The Help'This time a year ago, The brand new the new sony Pictures Classics co-presidents Michael Barker and Tom Bernard found themselves in a bit of the bind.Through reviews and festival reactions, Lesley Manville had established herself since the breakout star in Mike Leigh's drama, "Another Year." Manville then ongoing to win charge actress award within the National Board of Review, the initial group to hands out honours for your season.Consider "Another Year" featured an in-depth ensemble and also, since Manville's Oscar chances may very well improve if she was put in supporting, not lead, the Classics team held meeting after meeting speaking about optimum positioning. Ultimately, installed Manville inside the lead category and he or she emerged empty on Oscar nomination morning."We'd overwhelming recommendations to put her in lead," Barker states. "As Mike Leigh themselves referred to it, her character opens the film, finishes the film which is that character's arc that dictates the season within the presence of individuals people. To ensure that is exactly what we did. Sometimes, it really doesn't work view you need.InchHonours consultants, studio professionals and publicists face this same dilemma each year with numerous performances that could use either charge or supporting groups. This season's quandaries -- incorporated within this Kaira Pitt in "The Tree of Existence," some people in the "Carnage" ensemble, Emma Stone and Viola Davis from "The AssistanceInch -- should prove less nettlesome than Manville's situation a year ago, unless of course obviously, clearly, you're connected and among people films."You will discover lots of layers of people involved," gripes one honours campaigner, "and many types of people people have their unique agendas, their unique opinions."And, it must be noted: Sometimes Academy voters ignore everyone's agendas and opinions anyway, and set a performance inside the category they feel fits best. three years ago, Kate Winslet was championed as lead actress on her behalf be employed in "Revolutionary Road" and supporting for "The Visitors." Winslet ended up being nominated and winning lead actress -- for "The Visitors," not "Revolutionary Road.""That was kind of strange," Barker recalls, "but Academy people can put a performance wherever that they like. In the past, the NY Film Experts Circle gave Anthony Hopkins supporting actor for 'The Silence in the Lamb.' You are able to start to see the reasoning: He only agreed to be inside the movie, what, 17 minutes? Yet he won the Oscar for lead as they was greatly at the center of the film. So you will discover certain performances and flicks where it could use either situation.InchThis season, people roles appear a bit more defined in comparison to what they've formerly. The brand new the new sony Pictures is campaigning Pitt in lead for "Moneyball," making his positioning in supporting for "Tree of Existence" much more logical. You could cause the argument that "Tree's" story would go to Jack, the boy carried out by Sean Penn becoming an older guy."Smartly, it appears sensible you wouldn't want Kaira Pitt competing against themselves," states Connected Press movie critic Christy Lemire. "Still, if he is not lead in 'Tree of Existence,' I am unsure who's.InchThat question has furthermore been asked for of DreamWorks' "The Help,In . a sizable-canvas ensemble that sports two central figures -- Stone's youthful author and Davis' unhappy housekeeper. Both stars will probably be running in lead, while using relaxation round the recognized cast put in supporting."Stone's the catalyst, that will help you understand that, and Viola's story provides the movie having its emotional heft," states a senior publicist in the rival studio. The cast people from "Carnage" -- John C. Reilly, Christoph Waltz, Jodie Promote and Winslet -- will probably be competing against each other (or, no less than, their unique genders) inside the supporting groups. The Roman Polanski black comedy, which changes Yasmina Reza's play "God of Carnage," follows two groups of parents trying to hash out culpability around the playground incident including their sons. Some stars share the screen for virtually the entire film."That movie is all about stars supporting each other which is written in ways that they're all equal," The brand new the new sony Pictures Classics' Barker states in the decision. Glenn Close, Albert Nobbs Finally Have Their Hollywood Coming-Out Party
Although Albert Nobbs has made the festival rounds and has long been generating awards-season buzz — particularly for star and co-writer Glenn Close — the film only had its Hollywood coming-out party of sorts over the weekend. Close and fellow cast members Janet McTeer and Mia Wasikowska toasted Nobbs on Friday at a cocktail party at Palihouse in Los Angeles. With Albert Nobbs, Close is finally unveiling on the big screen the indelible role she originated on the stage nearly 30 years ago, playing a woman so fearful of succumbing to poverty in 19th-century Ireland that she lives as a man for more than a decade so she can work as a hotel waiter. Director Rodrigo Garcia said he jumped at the chance to take on the project because he was impressed by Close’s persistence in getting the film made. Garcia also talked about the extraordinary character at the heart of the film, and how losing a sense of self is a gradual process. “It’s all about the closets you build for yourself,” Garcia told Movieline. “Albert has spent so much time living in this closet that she can no longer remember who she really is.” Asked whether his choice of the word “closet” lends support to the idea that Albert — who courts a young hotel maid throughout the film to keep up appearances — is gay, Garcia said the character’s sexuality isn’t defined. The maid, Helen (Wasikowska), finds Albert puzzlingly nonsexual. “No gay person who has seen it thinks that Albert is gay,” Garcia said. “But for a straight person, myself included, any ambiguity makes sense.” Regarding his film’s awards chances, the director says he’s not campaigning himself, just “going with the flow.” He added, however, that he does believe an audience is building for Albert Nobbs based on word-of-mouth and a story that resonates with anyone trying to make it through tough times. Only time can tell; Albert Nobbs opens in limited runs in NY and Los Angeles in December, and in wide release on Jan. 27. Read Stephanie Zacharek’s Toronto Film Festival review here. Inspired by nuns who assisted her growing up, The famous host oprah Winfrey founded the Leadership Academy for Women in Nigeria, among the hyphenate's many charitable organisation initiatives worldwide. Jennifer Saunders Plans Ab Fab Film
Edina & Patsy have a hangover. Surprise!Though Absolutely Fabulous has been successful for years, creator Jennifer Saunders has so far resisted the temptation to transfer the format to the big screen. But now, according to Deadline, she may well be on the verge of getting a film together. Absolutely Fabulous has lived something of a charmed life, becoming a hit back in 1992 and running then for five series, before retiring with its popularity levels still running fairly high. It came back in 2001 for another four series, and though the reception wasn't quite as rapturous, it still got decent ratings. The plot, for those who've never glanced ay an episode, revolves around PR guru Edina (Saunders), who acts like a spoiled teenager, much to the dismay of straight-arrow daughter Saffron (Julia Sawalha). Edina's aided in her pursuit of a crazy lifestyle by sex-mad drink-craving Patsy (Joanna Lumley). There are no solid plans in place just yet, though BBC Films is hoping she'll write the script next year once she's finished working on the (shudder) Spice Girls musical. The film's plot will apparently start with Edina and Patsy waking up hung over in the deserted yacht owned by a tycoon with little memory of what happened and no mobile signal. While it doesn't sound exactly like they were on holiday, you do have to wonder why almost every UK sitcom picks a foreign destination as the focus for its film version...

Five Celebs Remain As Another Star Eliminated On Dancing
First Published: November 1, 2011 10:20 PM EDT Credit: ABC Caption The cast hit the stage for Dancing with the Stars, Oct. 31, 2011LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- It was a thrilling Halloween night of competition on Mondays Dancing with the Stars, but one celebritys ballroom routine proved to be more scream than dream, earning them their ticket home. (SPOILER this story contains the results of Tuesdays DWTS.) Scream franchise star David Arquette was axed from the competition, taking out the professional who won DWTS last season (with Hines Ward) Kym Johnson. This whole thing has been incredible, Ive loved it, but there must be a mistake because this is my show, I cant be going home, David said in jest, referring to a comment by pro Maksim Chmerkovskiy last week, after his partner, Hope Solo, received criticism from judge Len Goodman. No, Im just kidding, David, undoubtedly the cheeriest member of the Season 13 cast, added. When Davids name was announced he and Kym were in the bottom 2 with Nancy Grace and Tristan MacManus a shock went through the ballroom, prompting loud, lengthy boos from the audience. David, however, remained in high spirits. I came here to get to know more about myself, face my fears, entertain people, have America [get] a chance to get to know me better, and learn how to dance, he said. The actor added he planned to dance much more with Kym in the future. Thank you so much, youve been so sweet and patient with me and I plan on dancing with you a lot more if youll have me, he said. Of course I will, Kym said, as she hugged him. It did not appear that his devoted daughter, Coco Arquette, was in the audience to see dad eliminated. While David is out, HLN host Nancy Grace appeared surprised that she made it through another week. As cameras cut to her, she was embraced by her fellow DWTS cast mates, and she pretended to collapse into one of the professionals arms. DWTS returns on Monday at 8/7 C on ABC.
