SAG Film Nominations: Who Surprised, Who Got Snubbed?
Some large surprises inside the SAG Award film nominations today--mostly in the bad variety. Latecomers for the race like "The Woman While using Dragon Tattoo" and "Very Noisy and very Close" were overlooked--from talking with Nom Comm people, I learned virtually nobody saw either. Despite screeners and special tests, the flicks need to get available earlier, probably by Thanksgiving no less than. The primary one exception is Meryl Streep for "The Iron Lady" but let's tell the truth she's Meryl Streep. To conclude by category:Male Actor in the Leading Role: DEMIN BICHIR / Carlos Galindo - "A Far Greater Existence"GEORGE CLOONEY / Matt King - "THE DESCENDANTS" LEONARDO DiCAPRIO / J. Edgar Hoover - "J. EDGAR" JEAN DUJARDIN / George - "THE ARTIST" Kaira PITT / Billy Beane - "MONEYBALL"Very happy to see Bichir slip looking for his great be employed in "A Far Greater Existence." Much less very happy to start to see the omissions of Michael Shannon for "Take Shelter" and Michael Fassbender for "Shame." Also, while Gary Oldman didn't get yourself a jerk for "Mess Tailor Soldier Spy," I actually do think he'll ultimately come with an Oscar nomination. The film is just now being seen by people, and buzz should build for your extended-respected actor inside the future.Feminine Actor in the Leading Role: GLENN CLOSE / Albert Nobbs - "ALBERT NOBBS" VIOLA DAVIS / Aibileen Clark - "The AssistanceInch MERYL STREEP / Margaret Thatcher - "THE IRON LADY" TILDA SWINTON / Avoi - "We Must Discuss KEVIN"MICHELLE WILLIAMS / Marilyn Monroe - "MY WEEK WITH MARILYN" Can't argue with one of these nominees. Was starting to obtain worried for Close, whose been left off some recent lists, like the Critics' Choice Movie Honours, but stars came through on her behalf. I wouldn't say this list is foolproof if the requires the Oscar nominations, however, as Charlize Theron could still slip looking for "Youthful Adult. " Not surprised that SAG didn't choose her, as much Nom Comm voters I spoken to found the film unfulfilling. But she's not in the race having a extended shot.Male Actor in the Supporting Role: KENNETH BRANAGH / Mister Laurence Olivier - "MY WEEK WITH MARILYN"ARMIE HAMMER / Clyde Tolson - "J. EDGAR"JONAH HILL / Peter Brand - "MONEYBALL"NICK NOLTE / Paddy Conlon - "WARRIOR"CHRISTOPHER PLUMMER / Hal - "BEGINNERS"So relieved Nick Nolte made the cut. But shocked that Albert Brooks, that's been accumulating experts honours for "Drive," was snubbed. Also disappointed Patton Oswalt wasn't famous for "Youthful Adult," after i think he steals the film. However when i mentioned earlier, the Nom Comm was lukewarm round the movie. I still think Brooks and Oswalt can sneak to the Oscar race, and would say Hammer and Hill will be the most vulnerable. Of course, this really is really the very best area--every one of these stars are excellent.Womanly Actor in the Supporting Role: BRNICE BEJO / Peppy - "THE ARTIST"JESSICA CHASTAIN / Celia Foote - "The AssistanceInchBethany McCARTHY / Megan - "BRIDESMAIDS"Jesse McTEER / Hubert Page - "ALBERT NOBBS"OCTAVIA SPENCER / Minny Jackson - "The AssistanceInchPleased that McCarthy made the cut, excited Chastain ws recognized, as well as the other three are not any-brainers. I am surprised, however, that Shailene Woodley wasn't famous for "The Descendants." Will not have loved a jerk on her behalf co-star Judy Greer, but understood it absolutely was a longshot. And Vanessa Redgrave, once the leader for "Coriolanus," remains essentially forgotten.Cast from the Film: "THE ARTIST""BRIDESMAIDS""THE DESCENDANTS""The AssistanceInchInchNight amount of time in PARIS" No arguments here. Would enjoy these fine ensembles winning.Read Back Stage's nominations announcement here. Discover More About Behind The Curtain

James Roday on Welcoming William Shatner to Psych: "He's Unstoppable"
William Shatner For his role as Shawn Spencer on Psych, James Roday has had to do a lot of crazy things over the years (see: dressing up like a vampire, engaging in a kung-fu battle). But the craziest may have been asking guest star William Shatner to appear in a Psych video for Comic-Con earlier this year. "I was so nervous asking him to do that. It all ended up in my lap and everybody was just sort of crossing their fingers, like 'Roday, go see if you can get him to do this,'" the actors tells TVGuide.com. "And he was just so accommodating and so lovely. I think he could tell I was nervous about asking him and he totally put me at ease. He was like 'Of course, I'll do it.'" Exclusive sneak peek: William Shatner cashes in on Psych Getting Shatner to star in the video - in which he told "Psych-Os" everywhere to keep up the good work - was just the first step of his initiation into the Psych universe. On Wednesday's episode, airing at 10/9c on USA, the Star Trek vet will play the con man dad of Juliet (Maggie Lawson). "Psych kind of lives in tribute of pop culture and it doesn't get much bigger than William Shatner. But I think the key for us was don't use him as a joke, don't use him as a gag," Roday says. "Acknowledge the fact that he's William Shatner, but give him a great role with good stuff to do because he's also a tremendous actor." Shatner's character, Frank, returns to Juliet's life just in time for her birthday but nobody can tell whether he's really kissed his life of crime goodbye or whether it's just an act to win back his daughter. To make matters worse, Shawn stops at nothing to win over his girlfriend's dad even though she wants nothing to do with him. Roday made sure it was a part worth Shatner's time. "He's an 80-year-old who has as much, if not more, energy than Dulé [Hill]. and I. He had probably the heaviest load any guest star on our show has ever carried," Roday says. "He was working all seven days all day, and then the one weekend we had off, he did two live shows. He's unstoppable." Psych's James Roday on Shawn and Juliet, Gus' growing pains and breaking all the rules Although Psych has welcomed plenty of big name guest stars over the years - including this season Molly Ringwald, Danny Glover and Jason Priestley - Roday remembers a special feeling in the air the week of Shatner's episode. "We were all just kind of in awe. It was also the first time that you could tell that our show's crew was collectively star struck," Roday says. "We get a lot of great people, but everybody kind of showed up with their merchandise, hoping to get an autograph or get a picture." Watch a sneak peek from Wednesday's episode:

Miramax mines digital gold
Miramax's aggressive digital exploitation of its library is starting to pay dividends. The company has inked more than half a dozen digital distribution deals since new owners took over the library last year - including Monday's announcement of a pact with Brazilian subsciption-based service NetMovies - and now Miramax is in the market to securitize its assets. The securitization, which Bloomberg reports will total $550 million, will allow Miramax's owners to monetize the library's assets quickly -- and that includes those distribution contracts Miramax has inked with players including Netflix and Hulu as well as cashflows from future deals. And, according to Bloomberg, it will allow Miramax to pay a $142 million dividend to investor Colony Capital. Film-backed securitizations are not common, and usually include the production of future movies. Company has not produced any pics since a group of investors purchased it in 2010. A refinancing so quickly, and without new product, could signal that new investors are banking on the future worth of Miramax's older assets. While Miramax declined to comment on future production plans, many observers wonder how long the company can go without more aggressively acquiring or producing new product. While Hollywood started buzzing several years ago that streaming and digital platforms might beef up film values, few were willing to lend against those projections as very few deals were being made in the space. The proliferation of digital licensing deals over the last few years however, especially from major players like Netflix, Amazon and Google, have led some investors to believe in the long-term value of older content. The consortium of investors purchased Miramax from Disney for about $600 million last year. At the time, many observers doubted that the new owners could make their money back. Calculating library values now is tricky - evaluations must take into account the realized value of older assets and make estimations for packaged media, a complicated task given the decline in home entertainment revenues in recent years. And while digital dimes aren't making up for losses in packaged media dollars, they've certainly helped Miramax. Since coming under new ownership, the comapny has inked deals with platforms including Netflix, Hulu, Lionsgate and Facebook, making some naysayers rethinking that opinion. The Miramax securitization is backed by the company's library of more than 700 films, including "Shakespeare in Love," "The English Patient" and "Pulp Fiction." Beginning Dec. 1, NetMovies will make the titles available on a variety of platforms including PCs, Macs, Smart TVs, Blu-ray players, iOS and Android tablets. Company will also provide titles on video game consoles in the near future. Contact Rachel Abrams at Rachel.Abrams@variety.com

Manville then ongoing to win charge actress award within the National Board of Review, the initial group to hands out honours for your season.Consider "Another Year" featured an in-depth ensemble and also, since Manville's Oscar chances may very well improve if she was put in supporting, not lead, the Classics team held meeting after meeting speaking about optimum positioning. Ultimately, installed Manville inside the lead category and he or she emerged empty on Oscar nomination morning."We'd overwhelming recommendations to put her in lead," Barker states. "As Mike Leigh themselves referred to it, her character opens the film, finishes the film which is that character's arc that dictates the season within the presence of individuals people. To ensure that is exactly what we did. Sometimes, it really doesn't work view you need.InchHonours consultants, studio professionals and publicists face this same dilemma each year with numerous performances that could use either charge or supporting groups. This season's quandaries -- incorporated within this Kaira Pitt in "The Tree of Existence," some people in the "Carnage" ensemble, Emma Stone and Viola Davis from "The AssistanceInch -- should prove less nettlesome than Manville's situation a year ago, unless of course obviously, clearly, you're connected and among people films."You will discover lots of layers of people involved," gripes one honours campaigner, "and many types of people people have their unique agendas, their unique opinions."And, it must be noted: Sometimes Academy voters ignore everyone's agendas and opinions anyway, and set a performance inside the category they feel fits best. three years ago, Kate Winslet was championed as lead actress on her behalf be employed in "Revolutionary Road" and supporting for "The Visitors." Winslet ended up being nominated and winning lead actress -- for "The Visitors," not "Revolutionary Road.""That was kind of strange," Barker recalls, "but Academy people can put a performance wherever that they like. In the past, the NY Film Experts Circle gave Anthony Hopkins supporting actor for 'The Silence in the Lamb.' You are able to start to see the reasoning: He only agreed to be inside the movie, what, 17 minutes? Yet he won the Oscar for lead as they was greatly at the center of the film. So you will discover certain performances and flicks where it could use either situation.InchThis season, people roles appear a bit more defined in comparison to what they've formerly. The brand new the new sony Pictures is campaigning Pitt in lead for "Moneyball," making his positioning in supporting for "Tree of Existence" much more logical. You could cause the argument that "Tree's" story would go to Jack, the boy carried out by Sean Penn becoming an older guy."Smartly, it appears sensible you wouldn't want Kaira Pitt competing against themselves," states Connected Press movie critic Christy Lemire. "Still, if he is not lead in 'Tree of Existence,' I am unsure who's.InchThat question has furthermore been asked for of DreamWorks' "The Help,In . a sizable-canvas ensemble that sports two central figures -- Stone's youthful author and Davis' unhappy housekeeper. Both stars will probably be running in lead, while using relaxation round the recognized cast put in supporting."Stone's the catalyst, that will help you understand that, and Viola's story provides the movie having its emotional heft," states a senior publicist in the rival studio. The cast people from "Carnage" -- John C. Reilly, Christoph Waltz, Jodie Promote and Winslet -- will probably be competing against each other (or, no less than, their unique genders) inside the supporting groups. The Roman Polanski black comedy, which changes Yasmina Reza's play "God of Carnage," follows two groups of parents trying to hash out culpability around the playground incident including their sons. Some stars share the screen for virtually the entire film."That movie is all about stars supporting each other which is written in ways that they're all equal," The brand new the new sony Pictures Classics' Barker states in the decision. Glenn Close, Albert Nobbs Finally Have Their Hollywood Coming-Out Party
Although Albert Nobbs has made the festival rounds and has long been generating awards-season buzz — particularly for star and co-writer Glenn Close — the film only had its Hollywood coming-out party of sorts over the weekend. Close and fellow cast members Janet McTeer and Mia Wasikowska toasted Nobbs on Friday at a cocktail party at Palihouse in Los Angeles. With Albert Nobbs, Close is finally unveiling on the big screen the indelible role she originated on the stage nearly 30 years ago, playing a woman so fearful of succumbing to poverty in 19th-century Ireland that she lives as a man for more than a decade so she can work as a hotel waiter. Director Rodrigo Garcia said he jumped at the chance to take on the project because he was impressed by Close’s persistence in getting the film made. Garcia also talked about the extraordinary character at the heart of the film, and how losing a sense of self is a gradual process. “It’s all about the closets you build for yourself,” Garcia told Movieline. “Albert has spent so much time living in this closet that she can no longer remember who she really is.” Asked whether his choice of the word “closet” lends support to the idea that Albert — who courts a young hotel maid throughout the film to keep up appearances — is gay, Garcia said the character’s sexuality isn’t defined. The maid, Helen (Wasikowska), finds Albert puzzlingly nonsexual. “No gay person who has seen it thinks that Albert is gay,” Garcia said. “But for a straight person, myself included, any ambiguity makes sense.” Regarding his film’s awards chances, the director says he’s not campaigning himself, just “going with the flow.” He added, however, that he does believe an audience is building for Albert Nobbs based on word-of-mouth and a story that resonates with anyone trying to make it through tough times. Only time can tell; Albert Nobbs opens in limited runs in NY and Los Angeles in December, and in wide release on Jan. 27. Read Stephanie Zacharek’s Toronto Film Festival review here. Winfrey wages quiet fight against shame
Inspired by nuns who assisted her growing up, The famous host oprah Winfrey founded the Leadership Academy for Women in Nigeria, among the hyphenate's many charitable organisation initiatives worldwide. There is not one moment when The famous host oprah Winfrey recognized she desired to hand back to individuals less fortunate. The need was always together with her.InchI usually understood because I had been a woman that got saved," states Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award honoree Winfrey. "I had been saved through the kindness of individuals -- some who understood me pretty much, other people who did not know me whatsoever. I have never forgotten how that helped me feel as a person.InchThe multihyphenate, who founded the The famous host oprah Winfrey Foundation, the The famous host oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Women in Nigeria and also the now-shuttered Oprah's Angel Network, recalls an adolescence full of shame over her family's poverty. Like a 12-year-old living on welfare in rural Mississippi together with her mother and half-brother and -sister, she observed the energy of giving when several nuns visited her house on Christmas Eve, bearing gifts and necessities."It had not been concerning the toys as well as concerning the food," Winfrey states. "It had been about not needing to be ashamed."Years later, after achieving fame and fortune, Winfrey made the decision to emulate the nuns' Christmas gesture. She put together a team of 50 within the U . s . States and the other 50 in Nigeria and went from village to village getting toys and clothes and books towards the local people."I figured the children could be most joyful within the toys, however they were most joyful within the clothes," she states. "I recall telling among the employees, 'God, It's surprising they are more excited of these cheap little skirts and tops than soccer balls.' And she or he stated in my experience, 'The clothes reduce the shame.' And That I first got it. I figured which was a complete-circle moment."Despite the fact that Winfrey may be worth an believed $2.7 billion, based on Forbes, she favors tithing to having to pay taxes. So she is not jumping on billionaire Warren Buffett's demand the wealthy to pay for more taxes."Personally i think that i'm taxed enough," she states. "Should you checked out my earnings and imagined 1 / 2 of that likely to taxes, I believe I have done my share. Jennifer Saunders Plans Ab Fab Film
Edina & Patsy have a hangover. Surprise!Though Absolutely Fabulous has been successful for years, creator Jennifer Saunders has so far resisted the temptation to transfer the format to the big screen. But now, according to Deadline, she may well be on the verge of getting a film together. Absolutely Fabulous has lived something of a charmed life, becoming a hit back in 1992 and running then for five series, before retiring with its popularity levels still running fairly high. It came back in 2001 for another four series, and though the reception wasn't quite as rapturous, it still got decent ratings. The plot, for those who've never glanced ay an episode, revolves around PR guru Edina (Saunders), who acts like a spoiled teenager, much to the dismay of straight-arrow daughter Saffron (Julia Sawalha). Edina's aided in her pursuit of a crazy lifestyle by sex-mad drink-craving Patsy (Joanna Lumley). There are no solid plans in place just yet, though BBC Films is hoping she'll write the script next year once she's finished working on the (shudder) Spice Girls musical. The film's plot will apparently start with Edina and Patsy waking up hung over in the deserted yacht owned by a tycoon with little memory of what happened and no mobile signal. While it doesn't sound exactly like they were on holiday, you do have to wonder why almost every UK sitcom picks a foreign destination as the focus for its film version...

Five Celebs Remain As Another Star Eliminated On Dancing
First Published: November 1, 2011 10:20 PM EDT Credit: ABC Caption The cast hit the stage for Dancing with the Stars, Oct. 31, 2011LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- It was a thrilling Halloween night of competition on Mondays Dancing with the Stars, but one celebritys ballroom routine proved to be more scream than dream, earning them their ticket home. (SPOILER this story contains the results of Tuesdays DWTS.) Scream franchise star David Arquette was axed from the competition, taking out the professional who won DWTS last season (with Hines Ward) Kym Johnson. This whole thing has been incredible, Ive loved it, but there must be a mistake because this is my show, I cant be going home, David said in jest, referring to a comment by pro Maksim Chmerkovskiy last week, after his partner, Hope Solo, received criticism from judge Len Goodman. No, Im just kidding, David, undoubtedly the cheeriest member of the Season 13 cast, added. When Davids name was announced he and Kym were in the bottom 2 with Nancy Grace and Tristan MacManus a shock went through the ballroom, prompting loud, lengthy boos from the audience. David, however, remained in high spirits. I came here to get to know more about myself, face my fears, entertain people, have America [get] a chance to get to know me better, and learn how to dance, he said. The actor added he planned to dance much more with Kym in the future. Thank you so much, youve been so sweet and patient with me and I plan on dancing with you a lot more if youll have me, he said. Of course I will, Kym said, as she hugged him. It did not appear that his devoted daughter, Coco Arquette, was in the audience to see dad eliminated. While David is out, HLN host Nancy Grace appeared surprised that she made it through another week. As cameras cut to her, she was embraced by her fellow DWTS cast mates, and she pretended to collapse into one of the professionals arms. DWTS returns on Monday at 8/7 C on ABC. Back in Shape, Injured Star Returns to Met
NY (AP) Sidelined by a back injury just before the opening, Mariusz Kwiecien returned Tuesday night to take his rightful place at the center of the Metropolitan Opera's new production of Mozart's "Don Giovanni."It may have been too much to hope that the Polish baritone's appearance would jump-start the essentially stillborn staging by Michael Grandage. But with his dashing, dangerous presence and well-focused, insinuating sound, he did provide some welcome jolts of electricity.Kwiecien (pronounced KVEE-tchen) has sung the title role to acclaim in many opera houses, but never before at the Met. The role suits him perfectly: His Errol Flynn-like good looks, dapper figure and athleticism make him uncommonly believable as the serial seducer. And as fate closes in on the Don in Act 2, the anger and cruelty behind his charming swagger become more apparent.Barely recuperated from surgery two weeks ago to repair a herniated disc, Kwiecien did make at least one concession in modifying the staging. Instead of climbing down a ladder from a balcony in the opening scene, he first appeared through a door on stage level, pursuing Donna Anna, the woman he intends as his latest conquest. But any sense of caution was soon dispelled as Kwiecien gave a boldly physical performance, fighting a duel, dashing about the stage, or dropping to one knee as the occasion demanded.None of this is to take anything away from Peter Mattei, the fine Swedish baritone who filled in for the first three performances. He, too, is an experienced Don, with a voice whose beauty is in a class by itself. But understandably, given the lack of stage rehearsal his interpretation seemed a bit bland and generic.Kwiecien, on the other hand, made a strong impact despite not sounding at his vocal best. Several times his voice cracked as if he had a frog in his throat, and the more lyrical moments like the famous duet "La ci darem la mano" ("There we will entwine our hands") lacked ideal smoothness. But the rapid-fire Champagne Aria crackled with excitement, and he grew in strength as the evening wore on.The rest of the cast was unchanged, and there was much to admire: the spontaneity of bass-baritone Luca Pisaroni as Leporello; the sweet musicality and astonishing breath control of tenor Ramon Vargas as Don Ottavio; the stylistic integrity of soprano Barbara Frittoli as Donna Elvira; and the bright, potent sound of soprano Marina Rebeka as Donna Anna, marred only by a steely top.Fabio Luisi's conducting seemed breathless at times, and there were more than a few coordination problems between the players and singers.A lot was riding on Kwiecien's performance: He had only Tuesday night to prepare for the live HD broadcast this coming Saturday afternoon. When he came out for his curtain call, he raised his arms to the audience and grinned wryly, as if to say: "Look, I made it!"That he did, and then some.Copyright 2011 Associated Press. A fantastically written and completed plea for understanding on hot-button moral and legal aspects, the pic is perfectly pitched to have interaction the emotions and provoke discussion among fair-minded audiences of persuasions. Surely the initial film a great Asian-American guy associated with a same-sex relationship in Tennessee, the storyplot recalls the social realism of John Cassavetes with extended consumes which silence as well as the faces of people in emotional discomfort are as potent as words. Pic's stationary-camera aesthetic and naturalistic tone are carefully established inside the opening images showing Joey Williams (Wang) taking part in wonderful morning enjoy Nick (Sebastian Brodziak), a lively 6-year-old. Progressively, it's states Joey's extended-term partner is Chip's biological father, schoolteacher Cody Hines (Trevor St. John), who's soon after that destroyed inside an offscreen vehicle accident. Out of the blue, a constraint order is taken away against Joey, and Nick is slowly removed to Eileen and Dave's care. The film's winning component might be the way in which Joey approaches the daunting task of obtaining custody of the children from the children. Without any crusading speeches, Wang shows Joey just like a decent, regular guy who not understand legal and financial hardships, and merely desires to get Eileen and Dork to go over the issue. How he works toward this by utilizing wealthy, outdated lawyer Paul Hawks (John Murray) will move many audiences having its dignity and restraint. Rick Santorum Calls 'SNL' Sketch 'Bullying' (Video)
Mark Wilson/Getty Images Rick Santorum isn't laughing at a Saturday Night Live sketch that depicted Andy Samberg as him participating in "Yet another GOP debate" from a gay bar in San Francisco's Castro District. The former Pennsylvania senator and current GOP presidential nominee hopeful told New Hampshire radio station WGIR that the sketch counted as "bullying." "The left, unfortunately, participates in bullying more than the right does," he told the radio host. "They say that they're tolerant, and they're anything but tolerant of people who disagree with them and support traditional values." PHOTOS: Best Presidents in Movies and TV Santorum said he hadn't actually seen the sketch, saying, "I've heard about it. I haven't had a chance to see it. And based on the exclusive footage screened for the crowd of a nerve-shredding sequence involving over 150 zombies and our band of survivors on an abandoned Atlanta highway, the scares are definitely super-sized. "We're working really hard to make sure we deliver," continued Kirkman, the man behind the graphic novels the series is based on. For his part, Hurd says Kirkman has been a daily fixture in the writer's room, making sure the plots that have been laid out in his comics are tweaked to keep viewers surprised (especially the books' iconic Hershel Greene farm arc). Meanwhile, she and Nicotero have been on location in steamy Georgia overseeing the adventures of Rick Grimes and his band of sweaty, zombie-fighting compadres. The panel, moderated by Nerdist podcast host and comic Chris Hardwick, also featured appearances by several cast members, includingLaurie Holden, who hinted that her previously tortured Andrea "will get feisty;" a buzz-cutJon Berthnal, whose Shane will clearly live longer than his graphic-novel counterpart; andSteven Yeun, who received quite the positive reaction from the fans when he mentioned new cast member and co-panelistLauren Cohan's role as Maggie might mean romance for his Glenn. "You might meet some people along the way," Yuen said with a smile of the group's often-deadly search for other survivors. "And to find something to love? That's a great reason to live." Warner Bros., Downey team for 'Perry Mason'
Warner Bros. and Team Downey are teaming to relaunch the "Perry Mason" franchise as a feature film, with Robert Downey Jr. eyeing the title defense attorney role as a potential starring vehicle. Like the original series of books by Erle Stanley Gardner, "Perry Mason" will be set in the rough and tumble world of early 1930s Los Angeles, and feature fan favorites such as Mason's secretary, Della Street, private investigator Paul Drake, and Mason's longtime courtroom nemesis, Hamilton Burger. Team Downey principals Robert Downey Jr. and Susan Downey will produce with Robert Cort, while David Gambino, Eric Hetzel and Joe Horacek will exec produce with Susan Feiles and Chris Darling. The producers are currently looking for a writer, whose script will be based on an original story by Robert Downey Jr. and Gambino. WB exec Jon Berg will oversee the project for the studio. Cort and his Robert Cort Prods. exec Hetzel teamed with Darling and Feiles of Action Entertainment to bring the idea for the feature relaunch of "Perry Mason" to Team Downey. Estate attorney Horacek negotiated the rights deal on behalf of Paisano Prods. Gardner's 82 "Perry Mason" novels and dozens of short stories have been published in 37 languages worldwide. With book sales exceeding 425 million, Gardner, who mentored both Raymond Chandler and Dashiell Hammett early in the careers, surpassed them both in sales, even combined. At the height of his popularity, Gardner sold an average of 26,000 "Perry Mason" books per day. A "Perry Mason" radio series began in 1937, running 3,257 episodes, and there were 34 two-hour telepics and six feature films beginning in the 1930s from Warners. But the character is perhaps best known as the protag of the popular TV show starring Raymond Burr, which ran on CBS from 1957 to 1966 and featured memorable theme music composed by Fred Steiner. The series still plays everyday in 87 languages around the world. Robert Downey Jr., who next stars in "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows," is currently reprising his role as Iron Man in Marvel's "The Avengers." He is repped by CAA. Elton John
Presented by Caesars Palace. Performers: Elton John, Davey Johnstone, Nigel Olsson, Bob Birch, John Mahon, Ray Cooper, Kim Bullard. Reviewed Sept. 28, 2011Never let it be said that Elton John doesn't have a sense of humor. His highly-anticipated return to Caesars Palace Colosseum began with his longtime band playing the opening to "The Bitch Is Back," as the superstar swanned onstage in a bejeweled cape so sparkly and bright that even Liberace would have had to think twice about donning it. "The Million Dollar Piano," as opposed to "The Red Piano" -- the title of his previous five-year run at Caesars that ended in 2008 -- travels down much of the same yellow brick road musically as its predecessor, but it veers off the beaten path in a way that is sure to satisfy longtime fans. "Red" contained wall-to-wall hits. "Million," so named because John's piano allegedly cost $1 million and took nearly four years for Yamaha to manufacture, is also hit-driven, but in the middle of the two-hour show, John delved deep into his estimable catalog, pulling out such chestnuts as 1971's "Indian Sunset" (perhaps best known in the U.S. as a sample source for Tupac Shakur's posthumous 2004 hit "Ghetto Gospel"), "Honky Chateau's" "Mona Lisa and Mad Hatters" and "Better Off Dead" from "Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy." John's entertaining, enthusiastic performance kicked into overdrive in the last half-hour, starting with the rollicking, piano-pounding "Hey Ahab," from his underrated 2010 album with musical hero Leon Russell, "The Union," before careening through "I'm Still Standing," "Crocodile Rock" and "Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting." Visually, the show, which will have a three-year run, has gotten a tremendous facelift. The set of "The Red Piano" featured neon signs and a large screen for the mini-movies that photographer-director David LaChapelle created for nearly each song. The set for "The Million Dollar Piano," designed by Mark Fisher, replicates a Roman bridge with movable ornate golden half-arches on either side -- so elaborate that they contain bas-reliefs of John's two cocker spaniels, Arthur and Marilyn. (The only obvious opening night production flaw? The lights on the arch stage left went rogue, often blinking on their own). Some of the band members and four female backup singers -- who were largely underutilized -- are positioned on a riser, and above them is another riser for percussionist and longtime John cohort Ray Cooper, whose movements are so flamboyant that he turns the simple act of hitting a tambourine into a major event. Behind all that was a massive screen that projected state-of-the art images for almost every tune, whether it be the colorful, Peter Max-like short films for "Philadelphia Freedom" or the beautifully-rendered animated timeline of John's life that plays behind "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" and ends, sweetly, with a photo of John's new baby boy. Other scenes are more abstract, such as baroque hallways and chandeliers that appear to move closer, as if in 3D. At times, the wild kaleidoscope of images borders on sensory overload, leading to a distracting, kitchen-sink effect. Near the end, when almost all of the bells and whistles go away during "Crocodile Rock" and the screen is projecting only John and his band playing, as well as the obligatory audience shots, the take-away is that for all "The Million Dollar Piano's" excesses, after five decades, John needs absolutely none of it to work his musical magic. Glam Slam: Ballet Flat Heaven
By Ryan PattersonLOS ANGELES, Calif. -- A store selling nothing but ballet flats just opened a couple of doors down from my gym. Hmmmm someone must be trying to tempt me big-time because, if you read Glam Slam even sporadically, you know I am a ballet flat fanatic. Every time I pass by the store, its like the aroma of baking cookies I feel like Im being lured in by dozens of gorgeous shoes! Pretty Ballerinas, is the name of the store and the brand of handcrafted shoes, which have been around since 1918. Kate Moss, Claudia Schiffer, Elle Macpherson and Katherine Heigl are all fans of the shoes. The boutique is adorable. There is a leopard print round ottoman in the middle for trying on shoes and one wall features stacks of shoes which reach the ceiling. The employees use one of those old-school wooden ladders on wheels, like the kind they have in libraries, to get to the hard-to-reach shoes. There are leopard print flats. Snakeskin. Suede. Velvet. With bows. With buckles. Neon. Metallic. Pointy toes. Round toes. Zebra print. Sequined. Pretty much any color you could want. Prices range from $169 to $775 for a hand-sewn jeweled pair. The majority are $250 or less though. They also make and sell kids shoes, which are so adorable. With prices starting at $159 though, they are waaaayyyy out of my range its not worth it to spend that kind of money on shoes my daughter will only wear for a couple of months. But for the grown-ups, the well-made shoes are a good buy. Some of the styles have been the same for more than 40 years- now thats truly a classic! Copyright 2011 by NBC Universal, Inc.
